Nigeria curbs disruption of fiber optics

Frequently damaged Outdoor Fiber Optic Cable, usually caused by road construction and maintenance activities, leads to severe service disruptions that affect millions of telecom users. Last year, Nigeria recorded over 50,000 fiber cuttings, of which about 30,000 were attributed to road construction projects.
 
Constituents from various ministries and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). It will serve as a coordinator to develop strategies to minimize cable damage and establish clear communication protocols between telecom operators and construction companies.
 
Engineers Olufunso Adebiyi, Outdoor Drop Cable Executive Secretary of the Federal Engineering Department, stressed that the committee's main role is to develop standardized participation procedures to ensure that fiber infrastructure is protected before, during, and after road construction projects. This includes establishing instant communication mechanisms between telecom companies and road contractors, ensuring fiber layouts are incorporated into road design and construction planning, and working with federal engineering controllers to protect fiber infrastructure across the country.
 
FMoCIDE Executive Secretary Farouk Yusuf Engineer highlighted the critical role of fiber in Nigeria's digital economy. Reliable fiber optic networks are the basis for fixed and mobile broadband services, enabling economic growth and technological innovation.
